Are you looking for a high-protein dip or spread that isn’t hummus? Then this is a recipe you need to try.

Blended or Whipped cottage cheese makes a great substitute in both sweet and savoury dishes thanks to its creamy and soft texture. In this recipe, I use different savoury flavourings to add to the cottage cheese. But you could also leave it plain if you wanted a more neutral flavour or to add to make a sweet dish.

Why you should try this blended cottage cheese

This high-protein and nutritious cheese is incredibly versatile and makes a great replacement for butter or hummus on toast.

Here are some other reasons you really should try blended cottage cheese

  • Blending gives the cottage cheese a lovely light and smooth texture – I know the consistency of cottage cheese can sometimes put you off. So by blending the cheese you remove this problem and create a gorgeously soft spread or dip.
  • Incredibly versatile with its creamy mild flavour – Cottage cheese has a very mild taste profile so can take any added flavouring you want to give it. It can also be used in both savoury and sweet dishes!
  • A healthy cheese option – Not only is cottage cheese lower in saturated fat but is also really high in protein (around 10g per 100g) which may help you to feel fuller for longer.

This spread is also a great option to add to the mix when creating a nutritious balanced snack. read more about HOW TO BUILD BALANCED SNACKS FOR BLOOD GLUCOSE MANAGEMENT in this article.

Low-fat or full-fat cottage cheese

The choice of whether to use low-fat or full-fat cottage cheese comes down to personal preference. Both work just as well in this recipe

Low-fat cottage cheese is a great option for those who are looking for a reduced-calorie option. It typically contains less than 2% fat per serving, so it could be a better choice than full-fat cottage cheese.

100g of low-fat cottage cheese provides about 40 calories, 6 grams of protein, and below 1 gram of fat.

Full-fat cottage cheese has a richer, creamier flavour than its low-fat counterpart. This type of cottage cheese usually contains around 4-5% fat per serving.

100g of full-fat cottage cheese provides about 100 calories, 10 grams of protein, and around 6 grams of fat. So despite the extra calories, it does have a slightly higher protein profile.

  • Also adds an extra silky smoothness

Flavouring of choice (optional)

Hand Blender (with the small blender attachment) or a Small Food Processor

Spatula / Mixing spoon

Mixing Bowl

This dip/spread works best using a small food processor, otherwise, you will have to spend time scraping it down from the sides!

How to make blended Cottage Cheese

It really couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is put the cottage cheese and avocado into a blender and blitz for a minute. You should have a deliciously smooth paste.

Transfer to a bowl and stir through any additional flavourings.

Additional flavours to try

This blended cottage cheese is delicious just as it is. However, Just like hummus, it is also versatile enough that you could stir through additional flavours for a change.

Here are a few of the flavours I have tried for inspiration:

  • Zhoug / green harissa paste – add 1 tsp
  • Tomato salsa – add 2-3 tsps
  • Chipotle paste – add 1 tsp
  • Sriracha Sauce – 1-2 tsp
  • Sambal chilli paste – 1/2 – 1 tsp (depending on how spicy you like it)

You could also try adding in some goat or feta cheese before you start blending for a slightly stronger more distinct flavour to your blended cottage cheese

But by far my favourite is the zhoug paste with its blend of green chilli and coriander.

Serving Suggestions

This tasty blended cottage cheese can be used as either a dip or a spread. But it also makes a great substitute for mayonnaise and yoghurt.

It’s great for a snack, used in your sandwiches at lunch, on toast for breakfast or even as a dressing to add to your salads.

But here are some other suggestions on how to serve your blended cottage cheese:

  • As a dip – served with crudites (chopped vegetables) for a total carb count free snack. Or it’s delicious with tortilla chips.
  • Spread onto oat biscuits and crackers – I love the crackers from Nairns as they are also gluten-free! Top[ with some sundried tomatoes or marinated peppers for an extra flavour kick!
  • Dollop on top of your favourite salad bowl – I use this whipped cottage cheese as dressing on my salad bowls for lunch and dinner.
  • Use instead of sour cream – why not try it on top of your tacos or with my Slow Cooked Chipotle Chicken or Lentil and Bean Chilli

Or try it spread onto wholegrain or rye toast topped with watercress and a sliced boiled egg.

This makes a deliciously healthy snack, lunch or savoury breakfast!

Tips for blended cottage cheese

I don’t use blended cottage cheese as a replacement in hot dishes as I find the texture can be grainy and look a little curdled.

If your blended cottage cheese becomes a little watery after storing it in the fridge, simply stir before using it.

How to store your blended cottage cheese

As with all cheese, it should be kept in the fridge. This blended cottage cheese will keep for 3-4 days in a sealed container or until the expiry date on the package. Whichever is soonest.

Can you freeze cottage cheese?

Yes, you can freeze cottage cheese but it will alter the texture. Cottage cheese has a high water content so the freezing and defrosting process changes this.
