This gluten-free sausage rolls recipe uses gluten-free ready-rolled puff pastry (for convenience), 97% pork carb count-free sausages (I use Heck), and for an extra special kick a tasty layer of chili jam. The result is a flavorful, gluten-free delight that’s both convenient and indulgent.

Additionally, the freedom to customize the recipe to personal preferences, such as using premium sausages and special ingredients like a chilli jam or chutney, adds a level of freshness and authenticity that simply cannot be replicated.


Is gluten-free better for a diabetic?

A gluten-free diet is primarily designed for individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, as it involves avoiding gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Gluten does not have a direct impact on blood sugar levels, and therefore, a gluten-free diet does not necessarily make it better for a person with diabetes.

However, We have found that the impact of the carbohydrates on blood sugar levels when we use gluten free alternatives does tend to be different to their wheat/ gluten counterparts. This may be due to their different glycaemic index and load. Unfortunately, the impact of these foods is unique for everyone.   • A convenient sheet or ready-rolled puff pastry, already chilled and no need for rolling

Gluten Free Pork Sausages

  • Read the labels as many pork sausages include breadcrumbs and sugar and have to be carb counted
  • I like the 97% Pork Gluten Free Sausages by Heck

Chilli Jam

  • Adds a distinctive flavour and stickiness to these sausage rolls

Egg

  • Used as an egg wash to seal the rolls and glaze the pastry

Optional Poppy or Sesame seeds for the tops

How to make the best gluten free sausage rolls

These sausage rolls come together effortlessly with minimal prep, thanks to the convenience of pre-made puff pastry.

Step 1

Start by preheating your oven to 220°C / 200°C fan and bring the roll of gluten free puff pastry out of the fridge

Using a food processor, squeeze your sausages out of their skins and into the food processor bowl. add the sage and blitz until everything is chopped and combined.

Step 3

Next, cut the pastry sheet in half lengthwise. Spread your preferred chutney on each half and then add the sausage meat mixture in the centre, leaving space to fold.

Step 4

Brush one of the long edges on each pastry half with the egg wash and fold the pastry over the sausage mixture. Sealing the long edges together by gently pressing with your finger tips. Cut each length into 7 equal rolls and repeat the process on the other pastry half

Arrange the rolls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, brush the tops with the egg wash, and sprinkle with poppy or sesame seeds. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes.

Sausage rolls are versatile, and you can create various delicious variations to suit different tastes and dieatry needs. Here are some sausage meat variations you could try. Simply don’t add the sage or chilli chutney and add these extra ingredients instead:

Caramelized Onion and Gruyère – Mix the sausage meat with caramelized onions and shredded Gruyère cheese for a rich and savoury filling.

Sun-Dried Tomato and Basil – Add a burst of Mediterranean flavours by incorporating finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes and fresh basil into the sausage meat.

Spicy Jalapeño and Cheddar – Kick up the heat by mixing sausage meat with diced jalapeños and sharp cheddar cheese.

Can I make sausage rolls in advance?

Yes, you can make sausage rolls in advance and store them for later use. Here’s how to do it:

Making Sausage Rolls in Advance:

  1. Prepare and Assemble:
    • Follow the recipe and assemble the sausage rolls as directed.
  2. Freezing Uncooked Sausage Rolls:
    • If you want to freeze them before baking, arrange the assembled, uncooked sausage rolls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
    • Place the tray in the freezer until the rolls are firm.
    • Once frozen, transfer the rolls to a sealed container or plastic bag, separating layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
    • Label the container with the date and baking instructions.
  3. Baking from Frozen:
    • When ready to bake, preheat the oven as per the recipe.
    • Place the frozen sausage rolls on a baking tray and follow the baking instructions, adding a few extra minutes to account for the frozen state.

Storing Cooked Sausage Rolls

These sausage rolls will keep for 2-3 days in an airtight container in the fridge. But, allow them to cool completely before storing them.

Freezing Cooked Sausage Rolls – If you are planning to store them for a longer period, open freeze the rolls as above and then place the rolls in a sealed container or plastic bag, and label them with the date.

Reheating – To reheat refrigerated or frozen cooked sausage rolls, preheat the oven and bake until heated through. The time will vary depending on whether they were refrigerated or frozen. in advance, you can have a convenient and delicious treat ready for any occasion.


Diabetes Note

While homemade sausage rolls may not be the healthiest option, it’s not a recipe I frequently choose to prepare. Nevertheless, opting for a high-quality pork sausage, free from unnecessary additives, contributes to a tastier and marginally healthier version of this classic treat.

Carb Counting

The overall carb count for 1 gluten free sausage roll, based on the ingredients we would count for is:

  • 280g of gluten-free Jus-rol puff pastry = 103g of carbs
  • 90g of Tracklements chilli jam – 40.5g of carbs

Now add all the carbs together – 103+40.5 = 143.5g of carbs

Finally divide this by the number of sausage rolls made, which is 14: 144/16 = 9g of carbs per Sausage Roll
