For years, I have used the traditional mixed spice blend available in the UK, but once I started making my own pumpkin pie spice, I never went back! This homemade spice blend has become a firm favourite in my kitchen and with the rest of the family. Every autumn and winter, I love preparing fresh batches to use in our breakfasts, desserts, and snacks.

From adding a sprinkle to oatmeal or coffee to using it in my baked goods like my Oatmeal Pumpkin Cookies. This versatile spice mix will bring a new warmth and flavour to your meals.

Why Make Your Own Spice Blend AT Home?

Shop-bought pumpkin pie spice is convenient, but is not that readily available in the UK. I did find these 2 options on Amazon by Badia and Buy Whole Foods Online (affiliate links). But they seem expensive and nothing beats the freshness of a homemade batch.

When you make a pumpkin spice blend at home, you can adjust the spices to suit your taste, plus it only requires four simple spices:

  1. cinnamon
  2. ginger
  3. nutmeg
  4. cloves

With just a few minutes of preparation, you’ll have a delicious jar of spices that can be used in countless ways. Plus, knowing how to make pumpkin spice from scratch means you’re always ready to bring those cosy seasonal vibes into your kitchen, without relying on store-bought mixes.

How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice

Making your own pumpkin spice blend is incredibly easy, and you probably already have the spices in your cupboard. Here’s how to make it:

  • 4 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground cloves

Simply mix all the spices together in a small bowl. Then store your homemade spice in an airtight container and keep it in a dark place to keep it aromatic and potent for up to 6 months.

Where to Use Pumpkin Pie Spice

This spice mix is not just for pumpkin pie though. It’s perfect for adding a cosy touch to a variety of dishes from Low Carb Apple Muffins, to warming oatmeal breakfasts like my Apple Overnight Oats, this spice mix brings out the best in every dish.

Some of my favourite recipes include:

Breakfast – Stir it into your morning oats, sprinkle it over yoghurt and stewed apple or use it in my chia seed pudding for a delicious start to your day.

Desserts & Snacks – Use your homemade pumpkin pie spice in cookies, cakes, and even smoothies. It’s also fantastic in my Ginger Stewed Apple Cake or Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies.
